The thing Penkov captured extremely well was the unexpected and even embarrassing regret that can set in after years in the new country. These 8 stories blend Bulgarian folklore with history and modern day situations, and are bitterly funny, tragic, sad, lonely, and just really, really good. What luck that I discovered Penkov's collection of short stories on the same week that his debut novel was released – now I don’t have to wait to read more from him! ![]()
